RELATIONSHIP WITH CLUP BEAUTIFUL: KEWELL
JUST over halfway through his two-year contract, Harry Kewell says his dealings with his Turkish club Galatasaray make for a "beautiful relationship".
And the mutual admiration between Kewell and his employers has certainly paid dividends on the pitch, where the 44-times capped Socceroos ace has been in electric form.
Kewell has scored 23 goals in 56 appearances in all competitions for Galatasaray since joining the club, who are three points adrift of first place in the local Super League after 11 rounds and guaranteed progression to the knockout stages of the Europa League.
The Australian winger has become as celebrated amongst supporters of the Aslanlar (Lions) as club legends Gheorghe Hagi and Hakan Sukur.
Before each match at Galatasaray's Ali Sami Yen Stadium in Istanbul, Kewell is called to all four corners of the ground by the supporters and receives a standing ovation.
His No.19 jersey can be seen in abundance on the terraces, while local media suggested recently that his form and ever-growing popularity with fans and team-mates should see him appointed Galatasaray captain.
But Kewell would be first to acknowledge it hasn't always been easy to adjust to life in Istanbul, away from his family in England for months at a time, and he credits his personal physiotherapist Les Gelis with helping enormously.
Gelis, an instrumental figure in returning the 31-year-old Kewell to peak fitness after five injury-riddled seasons with Liverpool, is based in Istanbul with his charge, also away from his family.
Together they've negotiated the cultural challenge learning Turkish life in the country's most populous city, with help from a club with a keen interest in the welfare of its headline act.
"It's been interesting, it's been a journey, I can say that," says Kewell.
"Obviously I haven't been here by myself.
"I've had my mate here Les, he works with me as my physio, we've had some good times and we've had some bad times.
"I think if we hit the nail on the head I think we'd say we miss our families the most and that's what we've found hard.
"We've pulled through together and we probably wouldn't have been able to do it if we weren't here together, plus we wouldn't be able to do it if these people (at Galatasaray) weren't respectful to us and vice versa.
"I think it's come into a beautiful relationship."
The Galatasaray fans' enthusiasm for Kewell is returned.
"I've had a few people come over now and I just say sometimes don't even watch the football, just watch the fans because the way they sing, the way they dance, the way they communicate with each other is unbelievable," he says.
"I think the only place you could probably top that would be South America, from what I hear from the Brazilians and the Argentinians we've got here.
"Other than that, I'd have to say these are probably the best fans I've ever seen."

Kewell'ın yabancı basına verdiği röportajlarda söylediklerini her okuduğumda ona olan sevgim katlanarak artıyor.
Öyle samimi ki söylediklerinde, sanki röportajda değil de karşıma geçmiş yüzüme karşı "You are the best fans I've ever seen" demiş gibi hissediyorum, mutlu oluyorum :) Biz onu, o da bizi bu kadar seviyorken bırakıp gitmez Galatasaray'ı, daha uzun yıllar Kewell from Galatasaray olarak kalmaya devam eder umarım..
Hastasıyız! Böyle efendi ve karizma adam yok şu an.Kendisini son günlerdeki performansından dolayı da tebrik etmek istiyorum.
